Most of the residents of Kentucky turned out in force for the filming for a new KFC advertisement.Residents of Kentucky have experienced their five minutes of fame after international fast food giant KFC chose the small town as the site for its latest advertising campaign.
The small village, located around 40km from Armidale, was selected to be in the national television commercial because of the village’s name.
Kentucky residents were the first people in Australia to try out KFC’s new sweet sesame crunch chicken at a special launch event held in the village on June 16.
Sydney-based advertising company Ogilvy came up with the strategy as a nod to company legend, which says that founder Colonel Sanders used to promote his chicken by giving it out for free in his hometown of Corbin, Kentucky back in 1929.
A launch event was held for the television commercial on June 16 with the area in front of the Kentucky Memorial Hall set up for a banquet where around 130 of the village’s 311 residents tasted the new product.
The event was filmed with the resulting commercial hitting Australian television networks this week.
The fast food corporation also poured some cash into the local economy, making donations to the memorial hall, public school and progress association.
Production scouts set the chain of events rolling in June, when they dropped by the village to sound out locals.
Kentucky spokeswoman Kate Hedges told The Northern Daily Leader that she was lucky enough to get the job of talking the population into the day-long shoot and although she was a little dubious at first, the production team was “so lovely they swung me ’round”.
“They chose us for our town name, but I think, when they got here, they were pleasantly surprised by the depth in the community,” Ms Hedges said.
Chief marketing officer for KFC SOPAC Nikki Lawson said she wanted to thank Kentucky residents for the great hospitality they were shown while visiting the village.
“We had a great turn-out for the commercial and the feedback on our new sweet sesame crunch chicken was outstanding,” she said.
