NOMINATIONS for Nationals preselection for the federal seat of New England have formally opened.
Nominations will be accepted until 5pm on July 20. The preselection meeting will be held in Tamworth on August 18 and all members of the Nationals in New England with six months
continuous membership are eligible to attend and vote for the candidate of their choice.
The local preselection is set to generate a great deal of interest from the wider community, with independent State MP Richard Torbay announcing his intention to run for the Nationals against Tony Windsor federally.
Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce has also previously expressed an interest in running for the seat if he fails to gain preselection in the Queensland seat of Maranoa.
New England Federal Electorate Council chairman Greg Kachel said he was looking
forward to strong interest in the process.
He said the successful candidate would have full backing to try and win back New England for the party at the next federal election.
