The unexploded hand grenade was discovered by geologists who were examining an old mine shaft at a property on McCannas Rd at Tillbuster on Saturday afternoon.
Police from New England Local Area Command attended the scene and the immediate area was secured.
Specialist Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit officers who examined the grenade deemed it posed no immediate risk.
According to Armidale police, the type of grenade found is commonly used for Australian Defence Force purposes.
Police investigations are continuing but there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the grenade’s presence.
Express reporter Ben Murphy will accompany the bomb disposal unit when it attends the scene to remove the bomb later today.
