INDEPENDENT Northern Tablelands MP Richard Torbay has confirmed he will run for preselection with the Nationals to take on Member for New England Tony Windsor at the next federal election.
Mr Torbay made the announcement in a joint media conference with federal Nationals leader Warren Truss at the University of New England this morning.
He said he made the decision to run after assurances from the Nationals that he could continue to campaign independently from the party on issues he felt were important to the local community if he became a federal MP.
Mr Torbay will continue to sit as an independent in State Parliament until the federal election is called.
The announcement ends weeks of speculation about Mr Torbay’s future, with the MP frequently declaring that the independent brand had been damaged by the circumstances of the hung parliament.
Monday’s Express will contain full coverage of Mr Torbay’s announcement and Warren Truss’ visit to Armidale.
Let us know your thoughts. Would you support Richard Torbay as a National Party candidate?
