The area outside the New England Hotel on Dangar Street where two police officers were allegedly assaulted in the early hours on Sunday morning.TWO people will face court next month over the alleged assault of a policewoman outside an Armidale hotel at the weekend.
Police were about to conduct an inspection of the New England Hotel at about 12:30am on Sunday morning when they noticed a man arguing with a security guard outside the premises.
The officers asked the man and two women to leave the area, but the man allegedly persisted in using offensive language. When the officers attempted to arrest the 23-year-old, it is alleged he resisted and a number of other people attempted to hinder police.
During the incident, a female constable was allegedly assaulted, grabbed by the hair and dragged across the road. A male constable also sustained minor injuries.
The man and an 18-year-old woman were arrested and taken to Armidale Police Station, while a
second woman was issued with a court attendance notice to answer
an assault charge.
The man was charged with common assault, using offensive language in a public place and resisting police. The 18-year-old woman was charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of hindering a police officer. Both are due to face Armidale Local Court on July 16.
The two officers involved in the incident sustained only minor injuries and were able to continue their shift.
New England Local Area Command duty officer, Inspector Rod Shoesmith said the incident was extremely disturbing.
“Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, but it shows that police have to carry out their duty in serious circumstances such as this sometimes,” he said.
“It is disturbing that incidents like this occur while police are simply doing their duty to prevent crime in the local area.”
Insp Shoesmith said the two officers were still at work and “performing their duty diligently”.
He said the incident highlighted the risks many police officers faced while doing their duty.
“While trying to protect members of the community, there can occasionally be assaults against police,” he said. “They do have to put themselves in these situations in order to carry out their duty.
“It’s disturbing that this could happen to police who are out in the early hours of the morning doing their part to reduce crime.”
Detective Inspector Greg Stier said alcohol could have been a contributing factor in the incident.
