Smith and Brown come to town for the Energy Festival

Hands-on demonstrations with passionate experts … lots to learn at the Energy Festival. This year’s Bellingen Energy Festival is set to be a big one, with a host of high-profile speakers coming to the Festival on Saturday July 28.

“We can hardly believe our luck, getting both Bob Brown and Dick Smith on the same day. This has added a buzz of excitement about the Festival that is palpable,” said coordinators Liz McCabe and Paul Nebauer.

Bob Brown and Dick Smith are household names across Australia, and their presence alone should attract an interested crowd. Other guest speakers Dick Clarke, Rose Wright and Ellen Sandell are also leaders in their fields.

Dick Clarke is a leading exponent of sustainable building, Rose Wright is experienced in creating effective regional food networks, and Ellen Sandell from the Australian Youth Climate Action Coalition is a great role model for young people.

There is also a raft of talented local speakers and musicians. The LandcareLearn sessions are especially tailored so that local experts can share information and provide practical demonstrations to everyone who wants to manage their land sustainably, whether you are a backyard veggie gardener, community gardener or a farmer.

There will be innovations and inventions including Moondog the solar powered catamaran, a Bio-gas 202 engine (carbon neutral and grunty); and a biochar retort demonstration, turning weeds and garden ‘waste’ into a valuable C02 sequesting fertiliser.

Over fifteen community groups active in the promotion of sustainable local food networks, plant diversity, community gardens, and a sustainable local community can all be found in or near the Community Tent sponsored by Kombu.

Bring your shopping basket, as the Growers Market will be offering fresh, organic, food and goodies.

Other highlights of the day are an exhibition by local artists from the Workshop Collective in the Main Pavilion entitled ‘Wrong Way, Go Forward”, and the ever-popular eco-kids activities including Funky-Junk Sculpture, sock-puppet making, gardening, environmental theatre and Old MacDonalds Farm. Bellingen Eye kids and Eric the Pushbike man are also offering a Bike Repair and Decorating workshop all day: get out your old bike and bring it along for free repair advice and help: there is a cost price for parts, but the advice, expertise and fun are free!

Take a look at the program inside, you will find something for everyone at the Bellingen Energy Festival, this Saturday July 28 from 8.30 am, Bellingen Showground. Entry is by donation.

A big thank you to our generous major sponsors, Bellingen Shire Council, Si Clean Energy, and the Bellingen Shire Courier-Sun for making the event possible. Also to Kombu Wholefoods, Weave Bellingen, Ventoux Cycles and Northfarm Accommodation for their support.
