An artist’s impression of the upgraded Bellingen Hospital. The Mid North Coast Local Health District expects to award a tender this month for the major expansion of Bellingen Health Campus which will see the construction of a new sub-acute care facility adjoining the existing building.
The $5.2-million upgrade will enable the Health Campus to deliver specialised palliative care and rehabilitation services as well as ground-level office and clinical space for allied, community and mental health staff.
Executive Officer/Director of Nursing for Bellingen Health Campus, Kath Boman, said the expansion would provide specialist services to people within the Coffs Clinical Network which covers Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Dorrigo, Macksville and Nambucca.
“The expansion project reinforces the commitment of the Mid North Coast Local Health District to continue to provide quality health services in the local community. It also enhances the role of Bellingen Health Campus as an important facility within the clinical network,” Ms Boman said.
The 14-bed sub-acute care facility features a purpose-built gymnasium and training kitchen, designed to support modern approaches to rehabilitation.
Preparatory works have started on-site, including the relocation of demountable buildings which have been donated to local schools. The preliminary work will also include the removal of undergrowth and selected trees to meet fire protection requirements.
The expansion project is expected to be completed by mid to late 2013.
