Winter certainly arrived with some big frosts and wet weekends, but with the winter solstice already passed (June 21) the days should begin to get longer once again.

The big frosts have not been very kind to the gardens and lawns, but at least we can have a little break from mowing.

Wimbledon: No doubt ardent tennis fans saw our Samantha Stoser win her first round on Monday evening.

Unfortunately at this stage no other ‘Aussies’ have achieved this.

Black Caviar kept most of us out of bed on Saturday night to prepare us for late nights/early morning to watch the tennis and after that the Olympic Games.

Birthdays: What a fortnight it has been for ‘special birthdays’!

Happy 98th: Congratulations to Thora Reeves who was born on June 25 1914.

Thora celebrated an early 98th birthday with her two sons Harvey (Perth) and Ross (South Coast).

Close family members and friends including Bruce Clifford, Liz and Murray Napier from Young, Loriss Napier, Sandra Halls, Robert and Lynell Reeves, Jean Burns and Nancy Jones attended the Saturday lunch at the Happy Inn Chinese Restaurant.

One funny side to the celebration was that Ice Cream Birthday Cakes don’t keep too well in a normal refrigerator!

Another OBE: Last Sunday, June 24, Aub Beasley celebrated his 80th birthday at the Albion Hotel dining room with his nieces, nephews and close friends. One niece travelled from Cootamundra to help celebrate.

The dining room was decorated in red and green, the colours of his beloved South Sydney Rabbits.

After blowing out his birthday candles, Bill Rudd presented Aub with an OBE (Over Bloody Eighty) certificate and spoke of their friendship over many years. A lovely afternoon was had by all who attended.

Sixties Celebrations: Former local girls Gail (Hall) Smith, from Dural, Monica (Smith) Rolls from Canberra, Lynne (Light) Shaw from Geurie and Rhonda (Bush) O’Brien from Cowra returned home to celebrate their 60th birthdays last weekend.

Gail’s husband Ray, her sister Lexie Cassidy from Boggabri and her brother Mark Hall were in attendance as well as Lynne’s friend Terry Lemon (Geurie), Alison Knowles and Robert and Carole Baldwin to help them celebrate at Fettler’s Restaurant on Saturday evening.

21 Again: Val Forsyth was taken to dinner by her work colleagues on Tuesday evening to celebrate her ‘21 again’ birthday.

They all enjoyed a night of fun, food and fellowship to mark this milestone.

Naughty Forty: Lisa Baker was afforded a surprise 40th birthday party on Saturday afternoon June 16 at the Railway Hotel by her daughter Katelin and son Sam and Lisa’s fiancé Eric Brown and his daughter Mya.

Guest including her parents Kim and Pauline Davidson from Milvale and brother Alan and his wife Kelly Davidson from Canberra, sister Ailsa and her husband Mark Aitcheson and family from Albury, Aunty Wendy and her husband Neil Alderman from Melbourne and friends Zo and Dave Appleby from Canberra joined in the festivities.

Twenty First: Approximately forty family and friends attended the 21st birthday party held on Saturday Evening at Fettler’s Restaurant at the Railway Hotel to help Rhys Reid celebrate.

As well as his parents Carolyn and Trevor, siblings Jake and Nicole, his girlfriend Brooke Eppelstun and special guests – his Godparents Cath and Paul O’Brien were in attendance.

Sincere Sympathy: Sincere Sympathy is extended to the families of the late Col Monger and Beryl Clifford both of Grenfell who passed away recently.
