Back Row: Jai Purdie, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Gault, William Bucknell, Tim Brown, Jesse Thomson Jones. Front Row: Thomas Penfold, Angus Brown, Tom Robinson, Hamish Napier, Fletcher Taylor, Stirling Taylor. Absent Jack Ray.The start of the school holidays saw the under 11s make the trip over to a cold and dreary Wagga.
With a less than ideal preparation and warm up, the boys took to the field with Captain Hamish Napier against a revved up Albury side.
The Albury boys quickly took the advantage and dominated in all areas, except against the Grenfell scrum lead by Jai Purdie, and the Albury side built a good lead with four tries in the first ten minutes.
Then the Grenfell boys started to play rugby, halting the onslaught and turning the Albury side around. Tim Brown made excellent yards with good straight running and with support from Thomas Penfold drove the Grenfell side down the field. Tom Robinson picked up the ball off the base of the ruck and with good leg drive and support from Nathan Wilson pushed over the line for Grenfell’s first try right on the half time bell, making the half time score 4 – 1.
The start of the second half had the young panthers running angle and lines that had the Albury side feeling like there was 20 boys playing for Grenfell.
Stirling Taylor, Nathan Wilson and Jessie Thomson-Jones took turns running in tries giving them a sniff of their first win only to have the door shut by Albury with 2 more tries making the final score 6 tries to 4.
Well done to the Albury boys. Points to Fletcher Taylor, Thomas Penfold, Jessie Thomson-Jones and Tim Brown.
The second game was against a well drilled Tumut side was very one-sided and for the first half the only highlights was great tackling by Hamish Napier and Angus Brown as Tumut scored 4 easy tries.
Halftime 4 – 0.
The second half was more of the same as ball security and communication hampered the Grenfell boys and gave Tumut plenty of room to run the ball wide and score. Fletcher Taylor’s determination and tenacity was not enough but gave the big forwards a chance to run and Will Bucknell made some excellent yards.
Matthew Gault’s return saw him playing with the outside backs and with his size and bulldozer running was reminiscent of Jonah Lomu, however, this was still not going to get Grenfell over the line and they ended up scoreless.
The final score 8 tries to 0 to Tumut. Points to Fletcher Taylor, Thomas Penfold, Jessie Thomson-Jones, Tom Robinson, Jai Purdie and Will Bucknell.
